Faith Milestones is Cornerstone’s path for partnering with parents to equip them to disciple their children during the formational years of family life.
At key points in your child’s development we provide training and support so that you may become equipped to teach your child spiritual truths appropriate to that age and beyond. After we help you to accomplish that milestone with your child at home, we will celebrate with you and your family at church with the whole congregation!
Four milestones will occur for you and your child between the ages of birth and 6th grade. During the training sessions for each milestone, we as the church will come alongside you as the parents with teaching, resources and support to help you do the job that God has given you: to disciple your children in the fear and instruction of the Lord that they might know and live out the Gospel.
Children and parents may begin with whatever milestone is appropriate to their current age.
Gospel Promises: Infant Baptism or Dedication
"The promise is for you and your children..." (Acts 2:39, NIV)
This milestone will teach parent about the significance and meaning of dedication/baptism and lays a biblical foundation for their role during the upcoming years to raise their children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. You are the primary disciple-makers of your children! The culmination of this milestone is the baptism or dedication of your child.
Training Meetings: TBD
Gospel Beginnings: Essentials for the Kindergartners
"What I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures." (1 Corinthians 15:3, NIV)
This milestone will teach parents how to use faith talks and memorize "echo questions" (a catechism) with their children to teach the Gospel. A four-week devotional guide about creation, fall and temptation will cement where the gospel is found in the Bible!
For Parents of Kindergartners and 1st Graders.
Training Meetings for Parents: Sundays, January 8 - February 5 at 11:30 AM in Room 110
Gospel Truth: Second Grade Bible Reception
"Your word is truth." (John 17:17, NIV)
This milestone will teach parents how to equip their newly independent readers to take on a new level of ownership in reading and absorbing God's Word for themselves. Second graders will receive from their parents a more sophisticated orientation to the Bible as a whole and learn that its words are sweeter than honey, more pure than silver, and sharper than a sword. The culmination of this milestone is the 2nd Grade Bible Reception for the children and their parents.
Training Meetings: Sundays, February 12 - March 19 at 11:30 AM in Room 110
Gospel Business: J12 Rite of Passage for Sixth Graders
"I must be about my Father's business." (Luke 2:49, NIV)
This milestone will teach parents how to lead their 6th graders to a deeper commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ. As they approach Jr. High, students commit to walk with God, stay close to their parents (not pull away!) and, as Jesus was at that age, be about their Father's business. The culmination of this milestone is the much-loved J12 Rite of Passage and recognition in the worship service.
Training Meetings: April 2 & April 9, 1:00-3:00PM
